The Rochford Disability Football Academy began life as a project project undertaken by FA Charter Standard Development Club Hambro Colts under the stewardship of the Colts founder Bob Pointer. Its concept stems from an identified need to ensure that the provision of football for youth and young adults with special participation requirements is sustained. A generous grant from the football foundation allowed us to start an adult section and developmental pathway.
Such was the success of the section that in 2009 it became a separate entity and gained FA Charter Standard at youth and Adult level in its own right.
We have had many successes on and off the field but to date our greatest achievement is to have created opportunities for our members to achieve nationally recognised awards with 15 people gaining their first award or progressing to a higher level at the expense of the club.
The 9th and the 12th of March 2011 will be remembered as significant events in the clubs history for two entirely different reasons.
Steve Wright the much loved and respected coach of our Adult team will be laid to rest on Wednesday 9th March 2011 after a long battle with cancer. Steve was one of our original coaches and took over our adults section after we lost all of the original team and built it up from two players to over 25 young adults who went on to win both the Premiership and Championship Trophies in the first season of the Essex League a feat which will take a lot of equalling.
But Steve was much more than a coach he transported the team to tournaments in his 12 seater Taxi (With the kind approval of Airport 2000) and together with his wife Gina did much to make the club what it is today.
Steve was a true volunteer nothing was too much for him and to offer to give him money for his time was a grave insult we are a poorer club without him.
Saturday 12th sees us return home to where it all started at Cedar Hall School taking our place on the fantastic 3g Astro pitch that we supported all the way along its 2 year development.
So the end of an era becomes the birth of another and we move on embracing the future but remembering the past.
